Common English Bible:
“Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
(1 Peter 5:8)
Contemporary English Version:
“Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack.”
“Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy, and he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to attack and eat.”
Beloved, while you cast your cares upon God, and have no anxiety on that score, do not doubt that He is able and willing to support and fight for you, but be watchful because your enemy; satan, opposes you in your best interests. He resists your efforts to do good; your purposes to return to God; even work against your attempts towards your salvation. There is no more appropriate appellation that can be given to him than to say that he resists all your efforts to obey God and to serve Him.
The devil is likened to a roaring lion which is strong, fierce, cruel, especially when hungry, and seeking his prey and roaring after it, diligent and restless in his attempts, either by circumventing or assaulting you, just like in the case of Job. He is ready to swallow up and utterly destroy, by himself or his instruments.
Therefore, be on your guard, be at alert, be careful and cautious against the wiles and the power of the evil one always.
